RULER OF MALI
Creative Direction & Art Direction
My client sought to explore themes of power, divinity, and feminine sovereignty through an Afro-surrealist lens. The challenge was to create an editorial that redefined regality, blending historical references with a contemporary visual narrative.
PROBLEM
The Ruler of Mali combines divine imagery with cultural symbolism. Dressed in red and gold, the subject exudes authority and mysticism, while the gilded throne and draped backdrop create an ethereal atmosphere, balancing strength and benevolence.
CREATIVE APPROACH
Ornate gold detailing and flowing red fabric symbolize wealth, leadership, and divine femininity.
WARDROBE
A grand, elevated throne atop golden steps emphasizes hierarchy and ascension.
SET DESIGN
Soft, directional lighting highlights the subject’s presence, casting an almost heavenly glow.
LIGHTING
The subject’s posture, gaze, and interactions embody themes of authority, admiration, and the reverence of power.
